MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO

Is a 1988 Japanese animated film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli.

My neighbour Totoro tells the story of two sisters, Satsuki and Mei, who accidentally meet a strange animal in the woods behind their home in post-war rural Japan while their mother is hospitalized for a serious case of tuberculosis. Something that, because the girls have just moved into their new home and don’t know anyone, will take that animal, named Totoro, to take care of them.

Stands out as a humanist and supportive film. Seldom has the childlike awe of the unknown, that inexplicable mixture of fear and daring, of stupefaction and complicity towards the different, been so accurately captured on the screen that it turns each step into a reckless adventure, with one foot in reality and the other in the most overflowing imagination.

Honestly to me the film had never attracted much attention since I thought it would be very boring, but once again the Studio Ghibli has left me fascinated, the film is very beautiful and I recommend it for all ages. It shows us the magical world where there are spirits and magic.
